Region 2 Area Agency on Aging is excited to announce our Second Annual Safe Haven Benefit that will be held during World Elder Abuse Prevention week! The event will be held at The Pointe on Clark Lake to raise awareness and funds for the Safe Haven project. Safe Haven’s mission is to protect vulnerable adults from abuse, exploitation, and neglect. We work with Adult Protective Services from the Department of Health and Human Services in Hillsdale, Lenawee, and Jackson Counties to offer safe, temporary housing, care coordination and other needs to ensure the safety of at risk adults in our community.
Dorothy’s Story: We recently assisted an older adult who was living with family members in an unsafe situation. Dorothy’s family members were abusing her physically and emotionally. The abuse became more frequent and it became urgent for Dorothy to vacate her home so that she could move to a safe environment. Safe Haven staff, Adult Protective Services workers and other community partners helped move Dorothy into temporary housing and worked with her regularly to assist with locating safe, adequate, and affordable permanent housing. Dorothy now resides in her own apartment for the first time in her life, has supportive services in place there, and remains independent in the community. Before Safe Haven, this type of transition typically took much longer; exposing the vulnerable person to even more potential abuse. Dorothy is unique, but unfortunately her story is far too common in our community.
Please join us to support this important mission.
