The Region 2 Area Agency on Aging’s Safe Haven program has been awarded a Social Justice Grant from the Queen of the Miraculous Medal Parish in Jackson, MI. The grant funds will be used to provide short term emergency housing to older adults and adults with disabilities who need to get away from an abusive living situation while they get supports needed to find long-term options.

The Safe Haven program provides a community-based, non-institutional option for vulnerable older adults and adults with disabilities seeking to leave an abusive or neglectful home situation. Utilizing a person-centered approach, the Area Agency on Aging’s staff along with other community partners, assist program participants to secure a long term housing option and receive the resources they need to be able to live safely in the community.

Because of the high need for this program in our community, housing funds allotted for the year had already been used. “With this grant, we will be able to continue to provide emergency housing for vulnerable adults who need to quickly leave unsafe situations. We are very grateful.” said Angie Shepherd, Elder Abuse Victims Specialist Program Manager.
